My Current Fitness Faves

Back to fit dish Tuesday today. Thank you to Jill Conyers and The Fit Switch for hosting. Today’s topic is full of fun, fitness fashion pictures from the #fitfam. Before we get to my three though, please note I don’t consider myself very fashionable. In fact, I used to ask my mother for advice in high school (she was a textiles and clothing major and I did not inherit her fashion smarts). Second, I am not a photographer. I consider myself a picture taker in training, always trying to learn new things by experimenting.

So take that into consideration as I share with you my current fitness faves…

outfit 1

This first picture includes my new workout program I am trying out this month, Cize. I love Shaun T and I love to dance so figured why the heck not. And to keep my feet moving, I just got these socks and shoes from Six:02. I love that place because they have such a variety of brands that I love. These shoes are killer! I am so in love with them. It’s hot here in Texas so I like to go bright like the sun. This neon yellow tank pairs well with my new Nike capri’s. I will spotlight the capri’s in the next picture.

outfit 2

I don’t currently run, but I do live FEARLESS. Heck yeah! I love it when workout wear has a fun or motivating message included somewhere. A great reminder to kick butt during your workout! So even though I don’t run, I love to wear these doing yoga. Meet my black yoga mat with grey and cream flowers. I got it at Target. Thank you Gaiam. They have cute options!

outfit 3

I am sure many of you heard the news back in May about Texas’ flooding. We had some heartbreak in Wimberley so I found this shirt being sold to help with relief there. I love it! It is my current fave tank for working out or general wear. And it reminds me to stay strong during tough times! If you have ever worked out with me, you also know I LOVE Emi Jays or similar hair bands. I love this purple one.

What is one of your current fitness faves? Happy Tuesday!

Let’s talk summer habits

Summer Habit

What habits are you currently working on? I think it is fun to change habits every now and then. I am a HUGE believer in baby steps and celebrating improvements, no matter how big or small. So it is time to think about summer habits.

The fit dish link up topic for today is, “What’s one habit you want to create for summer?” Shoutout to the hosts, Jessica and Jill!

The summer habit I want to create is VERY simple. I have been in a bit of a workout funk lately and have not done ANY weight training in months. Months?!? Yep, you got it. This workout lover has been slacking in that department.

I blame it on my Fitbit. Don’t get me wrong, I love this device, but it makes me cardio crazy. I have to try and figure out how to get 10,000 steps per day for my charity team at work so that takes the cake over other workouts lately. However, I think strength training and flexibility training are important too.

So, my summer habit that I am creating is to do weights 3 times per week at home. I particularly like to use my 8 lb dumbells, 5 lb dumbells, and 18 lb kettlebell. Since my habit consists of 3 days per week, each of these will be full body workouts. I found this great workout in Women’s Health magazine so will start with that and then change it up in a couple weeks.

Have I mentioned Habitbull yet? It is an app that helps you develop habits. I have been using it the past month and find it pretty helpful! Check it out if it interests you. I don’t get paid to say that.. just like the product. I read about it in a magazine while I was on vacation.

What is your habit for the summer? Much love to ya, friend!

Simple Ways to Healthify your Vacation!

5 Healthy Travel Tips!

Who is going on a summer vacation? Or who has already been on one? Whether you are going somewhere this summer or not, you are bound to go on a trip at some point. And today’s Fit Dish link up is all about healthifying your vacation. Thanks to Jill and Jessica for hosting!

Now, let me be honest here…. I am not a strict exerciser on vacation. Why? Well, because 1) exercise is NOT what my vacations are about and 2) I would rather be taking in the sights and sounds around me with the people I love. Not everyone I love and travel with exercise. Ya know?

But, I do have some simple ways to stay relatively active and not overly indulge. That is more important to me than working out in the hotel gym or sticking with salads during my whole trip. Bah hum-bug!

So what are these two simple tips you speak of, Bri? Glad you asked dear friend.

  1. I get at least 10,000 steps and don’t sweat the rest. One of my favorite things to do in a new city or town is walk around. Walking is staying active and you can be amazed at how many steps you’ll get staying curious, exploring the beautiful place you are in. Actually, I think the most steps I have gotten in a day was when my husband and I went to Nashville, Tennessee. We walked around the downtown area for quite some time so even if he didn’t realize how active he was being, he got over 20,000 steps. Haha.. how is that for being active AND hanging out with ones you love AND seeing the sights? Just call me the step wizard!
  2. I try foods that really look delicious and don’t sweat the rest. On vacations, food is a secondary focus and not really a primary. Well, I guess it can be reversed for some (like chefs and foodies), but I 100% love seeing new places over focusing on food. And this helps to healthify a trip a bit. When you don’t focus too much on food, you eat 2 or 3 meals a day and only snack when hunger strikes. You still taste delicious food, but you aren’t participating in a gluttonous affair. Eat what you really want. Drink what you really want. And when your done, be done. No need to clean your plate unless you really are that hungry.

Did you pick up on the fact that I used “don’t sweat the rest” twice up there? Yeah, that’s because a vacation is supposed to be stress-relieving! If anything you are doing is adding stress, stay away. And that includes trying to be a stickler with your marathon training plan or 6 week cleanse while on vacation. No sir. Stress keeps that waistline thick too, ya know.

So what would be your top tip to healthify a vacation if even just a little bit?

I actually wrote a blog post for Nature’s Bakery not too long ago about vacations and ways to stay healthy. You can read that here if it interests you. It’s geared towards keeping you from getting sick on your trip so you have more time to smile and frolick to and fro!

Happy Tuesday, friends!

The rules are… There are NO rules!

The

I was doing yoga today. Not in the morning like I usually prefer to do yoga because I was in a bad mood whenever I woke up and DID NOT want to do any movement, I also did not want to eat a healthy, wholesome breakfast.

And you know what? That’s okay. Because the rules are… there are no rules! And that was my mantra today while doing yoga. Living a healthy life is never about perfection or following strict rules.

Not everyone wants you to believe that. Some want you to buy his or her book or follow his or her diet and fitness plan so that you help them become famous or put money into their pocket. A book full of rules that you enjoy at first and then feel ashamed about whenever you “fall of the wagon.” You blame yourself because the rulebook says you have to do it and if other people can do it, why the heck can’t you?

I am not saying everyone is like that. In fact, I think more and more people are truly becoming the CEO’s of their own body. I think more people are relishing in the idea of mindfulness, not only when it comes to various life things but also nutrition and fitness.

This. Is. Awesome.

I am really happy that more professionals in the health industry are pushing mindfulness, making your own “rules” (and being okay when you break them… consider them guidelines instead of rules), and being happy in the body you have NOW.

This mindset is so empowering. Yes, it takes away the excitement or thrill of the next fad diet or fitness plan. But, it also puts YOU in the driver seat instead of in the back of the truck. It’s a bumpier ride back there!

You are the CEO of your body. I love saying that. I totally 100% agree with it. So much so that it should be the tagline of this blog. I promise to never be the dietitian/nutritionist that pushes a diet, pill, or specific fitness plan. I promise to always help others see their potential and help guide them to making decisions that are best for them at that specific time. I promise to educate others on the power of changing simple habits and not following strict rules.

And just for the fun of it… what is one rule you have heard that you are going to break in terms of nutrition or fitness? One of mine is “Not eating carbs past 3pm.” So freakin’ ridiculous and is so not my cup of tea! How the heck am I going to know ahead of time if I want some type of carb after 3pm or not? That changes by the day!

Your turn! Happy Friday, dear friends.

Quick Workouts Just For You!

Quick Workouts

Who else needs quick workouts every now and then? I do not always have a full hour to devote to physical activity, even though I love getting active. Many times I simply do 1 to 3 twenty minute sessions throughout the day instead.

Today is the Fit Dish link up with The Fit Switch and Jill Conyers. We are all getting creative with quick workouts. I have not created any myself in awhile and to be honest, why recreate the wheel when there are a TON of awesome quick workouts out there?! So, I will be sharing my favorite quick workouts just for you!

These are all workouts I turn to regularly…

  • TIU Love Your Body with HIIT. High Intensity Interval Training is a GREAT way to get sweaty in little time. This has been one of my favorites for over a year now. I turn to it whenever I need a little boost of energy in the morning. I did it yesterday, in fact!

  • Yoga with Adriene Freedom Flow. This is one of those yoga routines that always puts a smile on my face. It is a GREAT way to start the day. I turn to this flow at least a few times per month. I do some of her other yoga videos on the regular too, but this is one of my all time favorites.

  • Tara Stiles Yoga for Strength and Focus. Another yoga video, but I am all about yoga these days. Not only for the strength and flexibility I feel from doing more yoga, but also the connection to self and the WAY I feel after doing it. It can be life changing if you let it.

Hope you enjoy whenever you need a quick HIIT or yoga routine! And don’t forget, you also have a VERY quick and easy way to get active… put your tennis shoes on and GET OUTSIDE. The weather is nice now so a walk or jog can provide a well-deserved escape!

5 Peeps I Want to Workout With

Processed with Moldiv

Is it really Tuesday?!?! I mean, I am thankful it is Tuesday but I got hit with a surprise day of meetings yesterday and today. That meant my Wedding series post for Monday and today’s Fit dish link up got pushed to the back burner. But, I look forward to both so am still going to post (even if late).

Oh and it is week 2 of the National Nutrition Month challenge and we have a new giveaway for it this week. I have the giveaway info at the bottom of this post. Be sure to check it out! And join in on Instagram… it’s fun. Who doesn’t like having ideas of pictures to post?!?! Or maybe it’s just me.. I love doing instagram challenges.

Anyway, back to the Fit dish link up with The Fit Switch and Jill Conyers. Today’s topic is a good one… Picking 5 peeps I would LOVE to workout with. Well, besides you of course. 🙂 Am I making you blush?!? You are on top of the list so this is just 5 other peeps.

  1. Shaun T. Oh my goodness, I don’t know if I would be able to contain my excitement. And I would probably be watching him the WHOLE time. Even though he is taken (and not into women), he is still easy on the eyes. And kick butt!
  2. Chalene Johnson. Her workouts are so inviting and invigorating at the same time. I want to be friends with Chalene and her team. Seriously. We could do Turbofire, PIYO, or any other workout she would want to do.
  3. Anna Kaiser. Did you know she is in the original Insanity video? And now she is on her own creating AKT in motion. I REALLY want to try this workout and hope to one day. It’s only available in NYC I think, but praying it comes to Dallas OR I take a trip to NYC.
  4. Tara Stiles. I am reading her book right now and would LOVE to meet this girl. She is so real and authentic. And a yoga queen! I hope to create a strong yoga practice and I have her and Yoga with Adriene to thank for that!
  5. Karena & Katrina. Yes, the Tone It Up girls. A duo I would love to meet someday! I seriously want to be their friends and often wonder what it would have been like if I had met a friend and created Tone It Up with said friend. Too bad I missed that boat. But, still very thankful these ladies are motivating peeps in such a positive way.

Who would make your list?!?

Move, Nourish, Believe

I am IN LOVE with the Lorna Jane philosophy of “Move, Nourish, Believe.” I was VERY excited when the hosts of The Fit Dish link up felt compelled to have us share how we will move, nourish, believe through photo’s. They dig the philosophy too. And how can they not?! It is so inspiring and I think you will love it too, if you don’t already. So thank you to Jill Conyers and Jessica Joy for kicking the link up off this week.

Before I get to my photo’s of how I will Move, Nourish, and Believe this week I have to share some NEWS….. I got to meet Lorna Jane!!!!!!!!!!!! I was like a kid in a candy store, so stinkin’ excited. She came to Dallas for an event so I took my bootay to NorthPark mall to meet her, do yoga with her, and have her sign my cookbook. Aghhhh!!!!!! Fitness role model alert times ten. 🙂

excited

So now back to the meat of the post. How will I Move, Nourish, and Believe this week?! Let’s do this…

{MOVE}

I am inspired to move through yoga almost daily. It sets the tone for a happy, healthy, and well-balanced day. In addition to yoga, I try to get in my 10,000 daily steps either through jogging, walking outdoors, or Insanity Max 30 when I feel the need for an intense burn! I have been adding in a bit of PIYO this past week as well so will continue that. I love how my muscles FEEL after it.

yoga

{NOURISH}

I believe in intuitive eating. I believe in nourishing my body with fuel that is mostly healthy, but also tasty. I do not believe in restriction. I do not believe in dieting. I believe in finding out what works best for MY body. I check in before meals to see what it is that I REALLY want. I know my likes and dislikes. I TRUST myself! One of my all-time favorite meals whenever it is cold (and yes, it is even cold here in Dallas, TX) is Harvest Vegetable Chowder. So many yummy delicious vegetables in this dish! And I always eat soup with crackers or toasted bread FO SHO!

{BELIEVE}

I used the word believe a lot in my “Nourish” post, but believing is a GOOD thing in so many different areas. I will believe in myself and in my goals. I will fall, but when I fall I will get back up again. Too keep this attitude up, I want to spend a few minutes daily in some form of meditation, whether journaling, moving meditation, prayer, or stillness. I believe in loving yourself, imperfections and all. Here is a picture I took from last week’s National Eating Disorders Awareness week.

How will you move, nourish, believe this week?

Wedding Series: 10 weeks to go!

Wedding Series 5

I have 10 weeks left to go until my wedding. I am back to the video blogging for all you visual lovers (like me!). I played around with a “makeshift studio” this time, trying to get a white backdrop. Hey, it ain’t perfect but it works. Appreciating the imperfect, that’s what life is about!

Cue the video…

For those that like words better, here is a summary of what I covered:

Wedding planning deets

  1. Decor: Purchased beautiful lanterns from Pier One. They are having a huge sale on lanterns and candles right now. Check this baby out!
  2. The dress is in! I got a call on Saturday that my dress is in and to schedule a fitting. I hope it fits!! I’ll find out on Friday. Wish I could show you the dress, but my fiance sometimes reads the blog so if you are interested in seeing it just shoot me a facebook message or email.

Health-related deets

  1. I am all about more mindful living… and if I have never mentioned it before, intuitive eating changed my life! I love following other professionals who believe in sharing a mindful lifestyle. They don’t prescribe diets because they know diets do not work. EVER. Period. I recently found a podcast that I am seriously digging on! Lauren Fowler recommended it on her blog (Mindful meals). The podcast is called Fearless Rebelle Radio by Summer Innanen. Greatness! And side note, I have REALLY been getting into podcasts lately so if you need any recommendations let me know.
  2. My fellow dietitian friend, Cindy, and I are kicking off the National Nutrition Month Challenge this week. Did you see her guest post yesterday and are you joining in? If not, you SHOULD be! We are giving away a $25 gift card to Whole Foods this week. Plus, photo challenges on Instagram are so much fun. Our goal is to promote a healthy, positive lifestyle with no restriction necessary! No don’ts… just do’s. Just the way we like it. Use the #NNMChallenge on Instagram if you are participating. It’s all in good fun and you won’t want to miss. Holla!

That’s it for the wedding catch up. How was your week? Name one of your favorite things you did this past week?

Movies That Inspire Fitness

Movies that Inspire

I love cuddling up and watching a movie every now and then. Although, if you ask MK, I don’t always see the whole movie.  I have a tendency to fall asleep EVERY stinkin’ time! I try to stay awake, but I rarely do unless we watch something early in the day. Or sometimes I will fall asleep for a good chunk of the middle, but wake up before it is completely over and then act like I saw the whole thing. MK always catches me though.

Some movies are super inspiring! Today I focus on movies that inspire fitness specifically. And my determining factor for this list is simply that the movie 1) has some type of physical activity included, 2) is inspiring, and 3) is one I can watch more than once.

Drum roll, please….. Bri’s top 5 movies that inspire fitness are:

  1. The Sandlot. This had to make the list. Who didn’t want to join a neighborhood game of softball or baseball after watching this when younger? Or at the VERY least get together with a group of friends and hang out outside. They are outside ALL THE TIME and doing what kids should be doing on the regular. I never get sick of this movie and will watch it FOR-EV-ERRRRR!
  2. Dirty Dancing. This movie may be about love and not putting Baby in a corner, but it’s also about dancing and doing something you have passion for. I love to dance and grew up dancing so this movie has always had a spot in my heart. Plus, I think I have watched it a trillion times. I am sure you have to. Am I right?!?
  3. Shag. Some have heard of this movie while others have not, but it was a childhood favorite of mine. Again, it made my list because of the dancing. I always wanted to be like Pudge and enter a dance contest (and hopefully win!).
  4. Rocky. How could I not put this on the list?! Eye of the Tiger is a staple “motivating” song! Rocky kicks butt and works hard to do so.  I’ve never wanted to be a boxer myself, but I
  5. Mighty Ducks. I guess I am still stuck in childhood whenever I think of inspiring fitness movies. 🙂 I remember as a kid feeling so inspired after watching The Mighty Ducks. They overcame adversity and worked as a team!

I could add more to this list, but the above are movies that inspire all sorts of fitness endeavors. There is no one size fits all fitness prescription and I TOTALLY dig that! Everyone is on their own fitness journey. Dance movies always inspire me to dance more and I love that.

What movie would be on your list? Comment below or join in the Fit Dish link up with Jill Conyers and Jessica Joy.

Wedding Series Vlog: 12 Weeks!

Wedding Series 3

I am very excited about this post. Lots to cover and I am still on cloud nine from this past weekend. I got to talk about the fun planning details with two of MK’s sisters. Decor is going to look AWESOME! We are going with a rustic type of theme. So, without further ado… here is the Wedding Series Vlog. Or you can skip on over it if you don’t want to watch the vid and just want to read the blog.

To summarize the vlog, I have a lot of the little things picked out for the wedding and have started a Pinterest board titled May 9, 2015. If that’s your thang (like me.. what did we ever do without Pinterest?!) you can click here to be taken straight to the board.

I also have the DJ picked out and MK is already working on his “must play” list. If I haven’t mentioned it before, MK is a musician so obviously there are songs he definitely wants to be played on the big day. My list would consist of Michael Jackson songs (Man in the Mirror, anyone?) and Motown hits. “Sugar pie honey bunch…. you know that I love you…. Can’t help myself…” Hell yeah!

In the vlog, I mentioned that I would show some pics of my favorite meals this past week. I am a simple eater so keep that in mind. Mainly because I am a simple cook. But, we all know I love simple things so it works!

Meals 2.16.14

For breakfast, I love a protein pancake with sunflower butter on top. I use Perfect Fit protein and they have a recipe for their protein pancake on the package. It’s delish and a breakfast that I look forward to over and over (especially when I work from home).

For lunch, I often have leftovers. My favorite leftover from this past week was Applewood smoked chicken. MK got a smoker less than a year ago so we are taking advantage of it when the weather is nice. The weather went back down to poo today, but it was beautiful last week.

For supper, I vary it up. I try to cook most nights and then leave weekend nights for eating out. I love Harvest Vegetable Chowder soup and never get sick of it. It’s a crockpot recipe that my mom gave me and has been my favorite soup since I was in high school. I like a good crunch so eat it with my current favorite crackers, Melba toast.

Most days I have at least one snack and this snack is usually a piece of fruit, nut mix, or yogurt. I am not a perfect eater by any means so please do not look at the above and think, “Holy cow, I need to eat less or eat more or eat better.” No judgment is allowed here! I always use the term “most days” because I have my days where I eat on a weird schedule, eat a little more or less, savor treats, etc. I show some of my simple meals to hopefully give ideas for the typical busy person!

The number 4 above is my favorite meal… it was my Valentine’s lunch. If I don’t eat a protein pancake with sunflower butter for breakfast I may eat a sunflower toast with honey for lunch. And one thing you will know about me if you do not know already is that I FREAKIN LOVE SWEET POTATOES!!!!!!! So, yes, I do eat those regularly.

I said I would give a couple favorite moves for working the sides of the abs or muffin top area. You will LOVE pretzel! You’re welcome. Let’s all challenge ourselves to do pretzel at least 3 times this week? Sound good?

There are so many variations but the above video will help get you started if you have never been to a Pure Barre (or other barre) class. My other favorite?? Side planks. I know you know how to do these. Get into those side planks and dip the hips a few inches & then come back up. Agghhhh I love it.

We covered a lot in this post, but the most important thing I have to say is…. HAVE A FABULOUS WEEK dear friends!!!!
