Movies That Inspire Fitness

Movies that Inspire

I love cuddling up and watching a movie every now and then. Although, if you ask MK, I don’t always see the whole movie.  I have a tendency to fall asleep EVERY stinkin’ time! I try to stay awake, but I rarely do unless we watch something early in the day. Or sometimes I will fall asleep for a good chunk of the middle, but wake up before it is completely over and then act like I saw the whole thing. MK always catches me though.

Some movies are super inspiring! Today I focus on movies that inspire fitness specifically. And my determining factor for this list is simply that the movie 1) has some type of physical activity included, 2) is inspiring, and 3) is one I can watch more than once.

Drum roll, please….. Bri’s top 5 movies that inspire fitness are:

  1. The Sandlot. This had to make the list. Who didn’t want to join a neighborhood game of softball or baseball after watching this when younger? Or at the VERY least get together with a group of friends and hang out outside. They are outside ALL THE TIME and doing what kids should be doing on the regular. I never get sick of this movie and will watch it FOR-EV-ERRRRR!
  2. Dirty Dancing. This movie may be about love and not putting Baby in a corner, but it’s also about dancing and doing something you have passion for. I love to dance and grew up dancing so this movie has always had a spot in my heart. Plus, I think I have watched it a trillion times. I am sure you have to. Am I right?!?
  3. Shag. Some have heard of this movie while others have not, but it was a childhood favorite of mine. Again, it made my list because of the dancing. I always wanted to be like Pudge and enter a dance contest (and hopefully win!).
  4. Rocky. How could I not put this on the list?! Eye of the Tiger is a staple “motivating” song! Rocky kicks butt and works hard to do so.  I’ve never wanted to be a boxer myself, but I
  5. Mighty Ducks. I guess I am still stuck in childhood whenever I think of inspiring fitness movies. 🙂 I remember as a kid feeling so inspired after watching The Mighty Ducks. They overcame adversity and worked as a team!

I could add more to this list, but the above are movies that inspire all sorts of fitness endeavors. There is no one size fits all fitness prescription and I TOTALLY dig that! Everyone is on their own fitness journey. Dance movies always inspire me to dance more and I love that.

What movie would be on your list? Comment below or join in the Fit Dish link up with Jill Conyers and Jessica Joy.

Wedding Series: 11 Weeks to Go!

Wedding Series 4

No video blog today, friends. Just words. I’m having an “insecure” moment and need a break from putting myself out there in the video world. No worries, “this too shall pass.” We all get there at times and it’s okay.

I have 11 weeks to go until I say I do! I had an absolute blast this past weekend with my soul sisters and best friends, the maid and matron of honor. They are blood sisters that I have known since the age of 2. It’s super cool to have two friends that I have been through every milestone with. I only have brothers so these girls hold a special sisterly bond in my heart! Okay, enough sap…  how fun is this?! We had a slumber party Saturday night for old time’s sake.  A girl is NEVER too old for a slumber party!

A few wedding details we decided on….

  1. Bridesmaids dresses! They fit and look beautiful so I have officially ordered them. I went with the convertible dresses from The Jersey Maid in purple.  They look good on all shapes and sizes! And the best part? Each bridesmaid gets to decide which style to go with (i.e. strapless, sleeves, halter, etc.).
  2. Couple’s shower! Matt and I were not sure if we wanted a shower or not. We are really set on having our registry be for charity. In fact, we had Dog and Kitty City (a no kill shelter in Dallas) register for items they need on Amazon. That will be our main registry/charity! I did, however, agree to have a “patio” shower on a patio. We will register for a few outdoor patio items AND still give the option to donate off our charity registry. The girls said I have to wear a yellow dress for this shower so I am a little giddy about shopping for a new yellow dress. I love having someone tell me ideas on what to wear. Feels like I have a stylist!
  3. Bachelorette party! It’ll be at the end of April in Ft.Worth. I love Ft.Worth’s downtown so much more than Dallas’ downtown. I may even bust out my Cowboy boots! No penis straws or blow up dolls for this bride… we are keepin’ it classy because my mom and her two friends will be there too (at my request). They are SO fun!! And my two high school buddies are helping coordinate it with the sisters. They are going to be a part of the wedding party as well, greeting guests as they arrive at the wedding.

An update on my health goals… sugar is so stinkin’ hard to reduce! My mind is starting to think of the sugar reduction as a diet and when I diet, no good things happen. I rebel. You follow? So, I am not focusing on any health goals this week in terms of nutrition. I am still not having much caffeine and will continue this, as it is now officially a habit. I don’t miss it! My fitness goals… I went so hardcore with Insanity Max 30 that I got tired near the end of the week and was NOT UP FOR IT AT ALL. I went back to walking and yoga. This week I am looking into an Insanity Max 30 and PIYO hybrid to try out for a bit. Will also continue with yoga.  You guys…. I am falling more and more in love with yoga!!! I want to find a local yoga studio to belong to. Luckily, I have a membership to Classpass so will try out a few studios before choosing one officially. Very excited about it!!

How was your week? And honestly, friends.. is the video blog from the past 3 weeks fun or boring?!? I can take it away, keep as is, or try to improve and make it better. I am thinking they need to be under 5 minutes IF I keep them. Any constructive feedback you have, I am all ears. Like I said, having an insecure moment with the video stuff. 🙂

Bri’s Life Manifesto

Bri's Manifesto

I wrote my manifesto this weekend. What I love about a manifesto is that it can be so individualized, but also applicable to others. Some people will have a very similar manifesto to me or be able to take a few things from it while others will have something different entirely. It’s in my own words. It’s in my favorite font. It’s mine. And that is a beautiful thing!

Do you have a manifesto? If so, share it. If not and you are curious, make one! I made mine in PicMonkey so it was super easy to make. And then join in on the Fit Dish link up this week with Jill Conyers and Jessica Joy. I can’t wait to see all of the manifesto’s that we come up with. I may have to dedicate a Pinterest board to this project. Ooohhhh Weeeee am I excited!!!!!

I started my manifesto off with love and passion because these two words are probably THE most important to me. I strongly believe in loving yourself first and in loving others around you. If we all shared more love throughout the day, dammmmnnn the world would be a better place.

And passion. Isn’t that a beautiful word? I love that word. I love the way it sounds and I also love what it means. We work hard and often so why not be passionate about what we do? I had a career job I was not so passionate about. I had just graduated college and moved to Houston to work for oil. Typical Houston, right? Most everyone there works for an oil company. But anyway, I worked there for two years and knew it was not for me. About halfway into year one I decided to take a nutrition class in my free time. I fell in love with nutrition and went back to school full time after quitting that oil company. It was tough and I hated being a student AGAIN, but the time spent to get that second degree was worth it. Now I have a career that I am so passionate about. Granted, even jobs you are passionate about have good and bad days and the end goal can change, but follow that heart, that arrow, that calling. It’s so worth it! You, my friend, are worth it!

Alright, enough from me. Share your manifesto or at least a line that you would include in yours!

Wedding Series Vlog: 12 Weeks!

Wedding Series 3

I am very excited about this post. Lots to cover and I am still on cloud nine from this past weekend. I got to talk about the fun planning details with two of MK’s sisters. Decor is going to look AWESOME! We are going with a rustic type of theme. So, without further ado… here is the Wedding Series Vlog. Or you can skip on over it if you don’t want to watch the vid and just want to read the blog.

To summarize the vlog, I have a lot of the little things picked out for the wedding and have started a Pinterest board titled May 9, 2015. If that’s your thang (like me.. what did we ever do without Pinterest?!) you can click here to be taken straight to the board.

I also have the DJ picked out and MK is already working on his “must play” list. If I haven’t mentioned it before, MK is a musician so obviously there are songs he definitely wants to be played on the big day. My list would consist of Michael Jackson songs (Man in the Mirror, anyone?) and Motown hits. “Sugar pie honey bunch…. you know that I love you…. Can’t help myself…” Hell yeah!

In the vlog, I mentioned that I would show some pics of my favorite meals this past week. I am a simple eater so keep that in mind. Mainly because I am a simple cook. But, we all know I love simple things so it works!

Meals 2.16.14

For breakfast, I love a protein pancake with sunflower butter on top. I use Perfect Fit protein and they have a recipe for their protein pancake on the package. It’s delish and a breakfast that I look forward to over and over (especially when I work from home).

For lunch, I often have leftovers. My favorite leftover from this past week was Applewood smoked chicken. MK got a smoker less than a year ago so we are taking advantage of it when the weather is nice. The weather went back down to poo today, but it was beautiful last week.

For supper, I vary it up. I try to cook most nights and then leave weekend nights for eating out. I love Harvest Vegetable Chowder soup and never get sick of it. It’s a crockpot recipe that my mom gave me and has been my favorite soup since I was in high school. I like a good crunch so eat it with my current favorite crackers, Melba toast.

Most days I have at least one snack and this snack is usually a piece of fruit, nut mix, or yogurt. I am not a perfect eater by any means so please do not look at the above and think, “Holy cow, I need to eat less or eat more or eat better.” No judgment is allowed here! I always use the term “most days” because I have my days where I eat on a weird schedule, eat a little more or less, savor treats, etc. I show some of my simple meals to hopefully give ideas for the typical busy person!

The number 4 above is my favorite meal… it was my Valentine’s lunch. If I don’t eat a protein pancake with sunflower butter for breakfast I may eat a sunflower toast with honey for lunch. And one thing you will know about me if you do not know already is that I FREAKIN LOVE SWEET POTATOES!!!!!!! So, yes, I do eat those regularly.

I said I would give a couple favorite moves for working the sides of the abs or muffin top area. You will LOVE pretzel! You’re welcome. Let’s all challenge ourselves to do pretzel at least 3 times this week? Sound good?

There are so many variations but the above video will help get you started if you have never been to a Pure Barre (or other barre) class. My other favorite?? Side planks. I know you know how to do these. Get into those side planks and dip the hips a few inches & then come back up. Agghhhh I love it.

We covered a lot in this post, but the most important thing I have to say is…. HAVE A FABULOUS WEEK dear friends!!!!

What I love about you!

I am really into rhyming and what better day to rhyme then on or near Valentine’s Day?!?! And I figured it would be a great post for the #WithLoveFridays link up. So, here it goes… What I love about you!

What I love about you

is complex and so true.

It goes beyond an outer shell

and into the body’s well.

Your inner beauty is magical,

a heart so pure and full.

It’s in the way you look at me

before we lay to dream.

When we’re happy, when we’re sad

Or even when we’re mad.

For you being there is enough

To keep the world right when it feels tough.

I love the way you smile,

it can’t ever go out of style.

And looking into your eyes

is a beautiful beachy sunrise.

Moments with you I want to freeze

So they don’t blow away like a breeze.

Let’s hold onto these days

Remembering all of our good ways.

So that even when we grow old

We’ll be in love and forever bold.

Our love will never fade away

Even when the skies turn gray.

-Brianna Peterson 2/13/15

Not trying to be cheesy, but I do think love runs deep. And it runs deep for all relationships, not just romantic relationships. So here’s to rhyming a bit on Valentine’s Day weekend and spreading the love.

How are you going to spread some love this weekend? Spending time with loved ones, pampering yourself (self-love counts too!), or trying a new and fun activity or adventure?

Much love to ya!

Make Your Own Rules Diet

make your own rules diet

follow Tara Stiles on Instagram. She is a yogi from NYC and started Strala Yoga. Her posts are very inspirational! Well, recently, I ‘ve been seeing her post about her new book titled, “Make Your Own Rules Diet.” I love the sound of that!

Anytime I can make my own rules, I am on board. And lucky for me, Starbucks had this book as their pick of the week a couple weeks ago. So I got it for FREE! And lucky for you, I have 3 extra pick cards for the free download. If you are at all interested, please comment below. The first 3 peeps that comment will get it. It’s a download for iBooks.

So back to it… I am not far into the book yet, but I can already tell it is a good one. Tara has a great way of connecting with her readers and followers. I also love her laid back, connect-to-self mentality. Ever since I embarked on my own mindfulness journey years ago I have been a firm believer in making your own health rules, especially in terms of nutrition.

I used to have the diet mentality, but got rid of it. And once I did, I became free. Free as a bird, I tell ya! I got to choose what food rules would make sense for me and kick the rest to the curb.

Same goes for exercise. There are certain exercises and workouts that I absolutely dread. So guess what?! I don’t do them. I do exercises that keep me thriving and thirsty for more. And I allow my workouts to change with the seasons if need be.

I now listen to my body and connect regularly with what makes me whole. Granted, I still have moments where worry takes over or weeks where eating healthy and exercising are no longer appealing. But, they are just moments and moments are fleeting. So I go with the flow.

All that to say, I buy into making your own rules and am excited to dive into more of this book. I usually read wellness-related books in between the intense, “can’t put it down” fictions to bring me back to reality with a lighter read. It’s perfect timing since I just finished “What Alice Forgot.” That’s a great read too if you need a book club recomendation.

You can find out more about Make Your Own Rules Diet by clicking here.

I turn it over to you… what has been one of your favorite reads the past few months?

Convo’s With Non-Fitness Enthusiasts

Today’s Fit Dish link up topic is an interesting one. I am not quite sure where to go with this so I am going to ramble and hope it all makes sense. Before I do, thanks to Jill Conyers and Jessica Joy for hosting!

I have convo’s all the time. It is a part of my job! I create and deliver wellness programs to various businesses so I often hear from employees that have questions, comments, or concerns regarding wellness. Not everyone loves fitness. I get that. We all have our likes and dislikes.

But, when I meet someone that absolutely hates fitness or anything wellness-related, I often think, “Too bad because fitness can turn that frown upside down.” It is not my job to change his or her mind. Stages of change, anyone? Not everyone is fully ready for a change in a certain area (fitness included). However, I love that through living a healthy life I can plant a seed at the very least. We are all on our own journey and in every aspect of life, we are growing at different rates.

There is another end of the totum pole that I want to mention here too. What about the non-credible fitness enthusiasts? Aghh, I cringe! The peeps that tout all sorts of health-related bullshit that isn’t really factual and just creates more and more confusion. I know I have mentioned it before, but most diet and fitness plans are plans that worked for that specific individual. To then claim that it is the BEST for everyone and we should all try it is nonsense. Our taste buds are different, our bodies and genetics are different, our interests are different, and heck even our goals may be different. Not everyone wants to look a specific way! So keep that in mind whenever you read, “Lose weight fast” and “Best diet ever” type of posts or articles. Be your body’s CEO! Don’t let anyone else take that role for you!

I can’t say I have many actual conversations with the non-credible fitness enthusiasts, but I often want to. If only I could tell every diet pill maker to f*** off, I totally would. I have friends that buy into the quick and easy fix, but man oh man is it just a waste of money. Hellooooooo, marketing scheme! It breaks my heart though because certain diets, rigid exercise plans, taking weight loss pills, etc. only lead people further away from a healthy and happy lifestyle that works specifically for him or her. What’s left could be disordered eating, insecurities, depression, overexercising, guilt, and shame.

Turns out when I ramble I get REALLLLLLLLL. Ya know what I’m sayin? So, I guess the gist of it all is that I strongly believe in trusting yourself, loving yourself, and being good to yourself. Even if I can’t change someone’s mind in that regard, I can be a positive influence and perhaps plant a little wellness seed.

Wedding Series Vlog: 13 Weeks!

Wedding Series

Wedding series vlog time. I have 13 weeks to go! Below is the vlog to kick off this week and then below is my summary of it for those of you who would rather read versus watch. I get you both!

First things first, how did I do on last week’s goals?

  1. No sugar. Wasn’t too hard for me during the week, but snack attack hit Saturday evening and I had a sweet tooth so indulged in some Dark Chocolate Truffle Hershey Kisses. Yum! I decided to revamp this goal a tad… after I hit my “sweet” spot, pun intended, I think having 1 sweet per week during this Wedding Series will be JUST FINE! More than fine, actually. You know I don’t like strict do’s and don’ts with nutrition.
  2. No caffeine. Killed it! Decaf coffee and tea is just fine for this lady. I will keep this up. Granted, I did have a withdrawal headache the first two days, but after that felt good. I love that I can now be fully aware of my energy levels. With too much caffeine, I couldn’t tell if I had artificial energy or really was tired and could use a nap. I think it is important to check in with your body and honor what it needs so I will be keeping the no caffeine kick up!
  3. Physical activity daily. This rocked. I did yoga daily and am continuing the 30 Day Yoga Challenge on the Yoga with Adriene youtube channel. I’m on Day 9! I also walked outdoors most days. I incorporated two days of Insanity Max 30. I needed the intensity to burn off some energy and stress during the week. I will up the Insanity Max 30 for this next week.

One other thing I realized this past week is that it is so easily to eat differently on the weekends. Anyone else? I stay up later on Friday and Saturday so often get hungry after dinner and before bed. During the week I don’t really like to eat anything huge before bed because it affects my sleep. But, this past Friday, I was hungry once we got home around midnight.. had a breakfast sandwich from Jack In the Box. When I woke up, I was not hungry for breakfast so skipped breakfast. Then, had a huge snack attack in the middle of the day. It’s a chain effect. I don’t mind doing this every so often, but a better strategy so that I am still hungry for breakfast is to have something small in place of that heavy sandwich after dinner. Perhaps warm milk, a decaf latte, or even a little yogurt.

New goals to kick off this week based off the above:

  1. Have 1 sweet treat per week on Saturdays.
  2. Replace caffeinated drinks with decaf coffee and tea.
  3. Daily yoga coupled with at least 3-4 days of Insanity Max 30. Other days walking outdoors (or both). #200ByWedding
  4. Replace weekend after dinner meal/snack with warm milk.

I got a request to show pictures of a few of my meals so I will be doing that this week and posting for next time. I will also share a few of my favorite toning exercises. Stay tuned! Oh and I will be throwing in some of the planning process for fun… this past weekend we met with our officate. He was AWESOME and I am so excited to have him marry us. MK really liked him too. We are looking for something unique to do in place of a unity candle. Any ideas?

If you missed last week, click here for the blog post and recap.

Much love to ya!

All you need is love…

All You Need Is

Seriously! These words from The Beatles could not be more true… “All you need is love.” With Valentine’s Day quickly approaching, I was very excited to see a With Love Fridays link up. I am joining in and I hope you will too if you are interested.

So, love… why do we value it so much? I think we value love because it is the very thing that connects us to others. Love comes in all shapes and sizes. We can have love for our parents, our significant others, our children, our friends, our pets, and even for strangers. Love and connection give purpose to life. We have love and connection to a higher power and we also have love and connection with others here on Earth.

I love thinking about love.. is that too much love in one sentence?! In fact, I am often VERY grateful for the opportunity to love another and to feel love back. It’s the coolest damn thing! Isn’t it?! Knowing that another loves you despite all of your quirks. Or knowing that you had a bad day, but you get to come home to a person or pet that loves you and cannot wait to be with you. Or even thinking about the love of a parent. My goodness, do I think about that often and how grateful I am for having parents that both loved me and showed me love daily. Whenever I have children of my own (or if I have children of my own), I know that I will show them the love my parents showed me. And I am so grateful for that. I see the importance of it.

I am picking out a few verses for my wedding and “love” is the very key word I am using to look them up. I still have no clue which ones I am going to choose, but in my search (we are meeting with our officiate tomorrow) I found some good ones so thought I would share. And if you have any off the top of your head, please comment below or email me!

Song of Solomon or Song of Songs 8:6-7
Set me as a seal upon your heart, as a seal upon your arm; for love is strong as death, passion fierce as the grave. Its flashes are flashes of fire, a raging flame. Many waters cannot quench love, neither can floods drown it. If one offered for love all the wealth of his house, it would be utterly scorned.

Ecclesiastes 4: 9-12
Two are better than one, because they have a good reward for their toil. For if they fall, one will lift up the other; but woe to one who is alone and falls and does not have another to help. Again, if two lie together, they keep warm; but how can one keep warm alone? And though one might prevail against another, two will withstand one. A threefold cord is not quickly broken.

1 Corinthians 13:4-7
Love is patient, love is kind. It does not envy, it does not boast, it is not proud. It does not dishonor others, it is not self-seeking, it is not easily angered, it keeps no records of wrongs. Love does not delight in evil but rejoices with the truth. It always protects, always trusts, always hopes, always perseveres.

Always choose love, my friends!

Favorite Things on Friday!

I keep seeing all these fun Friday favorite posts. I was about to write a post on love before I realized I have some favorites I can share from this past week. So many new things have made their way into my life! I love it. And I still probably will write that post on love so you may get 2 posts from me today.

Here we go… Favorite things Friday! They are all wellness-related so it can be a part of Fitness Friday too with Jill Conyers. YAY! Okay, am I just a little too excited on this Friday or what!??!

My first favorite from this past week is a new tea. I can’t get enough of this Lemon Zinger tea from Celestial Seasonings. I first tried this tea over Christmas in Colorado when my Aunt, Uncle, and cousins left some tea at my parent’s place there. It was Lemon Zinger and I immediately thought, “I love that I don’t have to cut up lemons for this tea.” I know, weird thought, but I always have cut up lemons on hand for my black teas. Although, as some of you know, I am cutting caffeine as part of my wedding health goals so am staying away from black teas. Well, this has been the PERFECT substitute!

lemon zinger

My second favorite for this week is a picture of this cute, cuddly cat of mine. I saw her laying like this today and it melted my heart. Little soap box moment… I really do not understand people who do not like animals or pets. They are gifts from God! I treasure my pets.. hope you do too if you have any!

My third favorite for the week are these workout capri’s I just bought from Six:02. I LOVE the color! And the picture stinks, but I just wanted to get a close up of the pattern so you could see it. These are Under Armour pants and have you been to Six:02 yet? I love that they have many different fitness brands for women available under one roof. Very cool place if you love a variety of fitness brands!

capri pants

My fourth favorite for the week is this book. I am reading it for my local book club that I just joined. I could not put it down. I read the whole thing in less than 5 days. It is about this lady, Alice, that hits her head in spin class and then cannot remember the last 10 years. She doesn’t remember that she was in the middle of a divorce; she still thinks she is in love with her separated husband. Very interesting take on a book and I loved it! I hope they make a movie out of this one.

What Alice Forgot

My fifth favorite is the scent of Eucalyptus and Mint together. Oh my invigorating! I light it whenever I write a post or am working on something serious for work. It keeps the stress away!

I know you have a few favorites from the week. Name one for me! And then go and enjoy the weekend. 🙂
