  1. What was your college major? Did you ever change majors? Oh man, oh man. If I had a dollar for every college major I have had… okay, it’s not THAT bad. But, I graduated with a Bachelor of Business Administration with an emphasis in Management from Texas State University. When I went back to school to become a dietitian, I graduated with a Bachelor of Science in Dietetics (and later a Master of Science in Nutrition) from Texas Woman’s University. And yes, I definitely changed majors before graduating in business. I originally went to school for Criminal Justice. The FBI was calling my name after I fell in love with Miss Congeniality in high school. I even was her for Halloween one year…halloween
  2. Best purchase you have made lately? I’ve made a few good purchases lately, but the BEST would have to be the shorts I bought from Gap Friday for $13. They fit great and hello…. $13?!?!??! What a steal!
  3. Something silly we don’t know about you and go… I love love love doing cartwheels. In fact, I felt the urge on my run today. I happened to be on the sidewalk of a very busy road and said what the heck?!? Reminded me to be in the moment and literally not care what others think.
  4. Favorite Holiday? Christmas all the way. I know 99% of people probably think the same and perhaps it is the cliche answer, but it’s my absolute favorite because of all the extra time spent with loved ones. And warming up by the fire with a Christmas movie isn’t bad either! Oh and don’t get me started on the Starbucks Christmas cups… I am one of those suckers for sure!christmas
  5. The first thing you do when you wake up? I go pee. Yes, I said the “p” word.

Delights of the Week: It’s Summer Time!

The 5 on Friday link up that I normally do on Fridays is going on summer break. But, since I don’t have a summer break, I will still participate and call it “Delights of the Week.” I love sharing cool stuff that either happened this past week or is about to happen this weekend. Keeps me delighting in the simple things!

So, here we go…

{Delight #1} Grilled Corn on the Cob. I am grilling corn on the cob tonight. My favorite way to grill them is with fresh sprigs of rosemary. Grilling out on summer nights is the BEST! What is your favorite thing to grill?

{Delight #2} Bumble Bee Honey Dipper. Okay, I saw this cuuuuuuute honey dipper at Central Market the other day and had to buy it. I keep a jar of honey in my pantry, but currently just use a spoon or knife. This dipper makes it WAY more fun and actually less messy than the spoon or knife. Now I just need a holder for it. They had the holders too at Central Market, but for some reason I didn’t think I would need it. Now I think I do… go figure!

{Delight #3} Truck Yard in Dallas. Any of my Dallas peeps ever been here? I keep hearing about it and am super excited to head out to this place tomorrow night for a friend’s 30th birthday. Hoping to catch some good drinks, tasty bites, and plenty of fun with friends!

{Delight #4} Stitch Fix Inspiration. I have had a Stitch Fix before, but it has been quite a few months since my last one. I am ready to try it out again. I read on their blog to create a Pinterest board so they can tailor your stitch fix to your style interests. I had fun creating my new Stitch Fix Inspiration board before work this morning! I am so in the mood for new outfits for summer… and of course, cute work outfits too.

{Delight #5} The Jive. My dance lesson this week was all about the Jive. Oh my, do I love this dance! It is such an upbeat and exciting dance for me. My dance teacher and I are talking about doing a competition sometime at the end of the year. I am pumped and finally feel ready… or somewhat ready. I still have a lot of work to do!

WTEW: Teacher Series- Kari

Pure Barre teachers

Are you enjoying the What to Eat Wednesday: Pure Barre Dallas Teacher Series? We are officially on week 4 of the series. If you missed last week, you can meet Amy here.

Today we will get to know Kari. She has been teaching Pure Barre for almost two years and is also a certified personal trainer in the Dallas area. Health is obviously very important to this fitness queen so let’s get to know Kari a little more, shall we?!

  1. What is your favorite fruit?  Avocado. I have one a day! 🙂
  2. What is your favorite vegetable? I never used to like broccoli but now I eat it all the time (steamed, grilled, raw, etc.). I eat it with hummus a lot as well as a side to any kind of protein.
  3. What is your favorite pre or post workout snack or beverage? Almonds, apples, bananas, or a protein bar.
  4. What is your top eating healthy tip or trick? I never diet anymore. I fully believe in maintaining a healthy lifestyle and making healthy choices. My general rule is 80/20 (80% healthy eating/ 20% whatever I want)! Also, drinking lots of water is very important!
  5. Tell me a random/fun fact about you. I love watching the Food Network and have dreams to appear on that network (my favorites are Giada DeLaurentis and Ina Garten). I’m not the BEST cook, but I love to learn. My dream is to study at Le Cordon Bleu in Paris! Sighhhh…..
  6. If you had a motto or a quote you like to live by, what would it be? Let it Be. That’s what I have tattooed on my back in Italian “Lascia che sia.” I’m always reminding myself to let life happen the way it’s supposed to and be present in the moment.
  7. How long have you been teaching Pure Barre and what is your favorite thing about teaching? I’ve been teaching since August 2012 and have loved every minute! My favorite thing is when clients approach me about all the changes they have experienced since taking PB (both physically and mentally) and that our motivation keeps them coming back. That makes me want to take it to “another level” every time I put the mic on and push them to their highest potential!
  8. Favorite Pure Barre move? Pretzel! When I first started as a client, I noticed a change right away in my “love handle/muffin top” area and credit pretzel for getting it slimmed down and keeping it slim!
I love how mindful Kari is. Her motto reminds us to be present in the moment. Her eating style does as well. How refreshing is it to know that you can live a healthy lifestyle WITHOUT dieting? Her 80/20 rule is one that I follow daily as well. And side note, if Kari does show up on the Food Network, I am totally having a watch party at my house. Who is in?! 🙂 Thank you, Kari, for sharing with us. Next Wednesday, we will get to know Molly.

  1. What’s your favorite scary movie? I love scary movies! Most scary movies end up being horrible, cheesy, or so not realistic. But, there are quite a few good ones that really do scare me. My favorite scary movie would have to be The Shining. My favorite series of scary movies would have to be the Hannibal Lector movies (Red Dragon, Silence of the Lambs, Hannibal, and Hannibal Rising). Best “bad guy” actors are for sure Jack Nicholson and Anthony Hopkins. Oh and scariest, but not necessarily my favorite would be the Exorcist. Crrrreeeeeeepy!!!!
  2. What is your favorite weird TV show you think no one else watches? I have no earthly idea. I am completely drawing a blank. I mean, I watch weird TV shows, but I know others watch some of the same ones too. Maybe the My Cat From Hell show on Animal Planet I watch once in a blue moon?!MY CAT FROM HELL
  3. What is the song you can sing all the words to without any music? My Girl by the Temptations. And now I have the song in my head… do you?! (I guess you’d say, what can make me feel this way….)
  4. What is your favorite book to re-read? The first book that came to my mind was To Kill A Mockingbird. I have read that many times and could so read it again. I haven’t in awhile, but I could. I even saw a play version of it at the theater when I lived in Houston. It’s so good!mockingbird
  5. What is the one website you visit more times a day than others? Does YouTube count? If I am at home and want a good workout, I may go to YouTube a couple times per day to do a quick Tone It Up workout or a yoga workout from Yoga with Adriene. I love both of those channels!

5 on Friday: Birthday

It’s my pre-birthday weekend so I am pumped! I am turning 30 on Tuesday and know that I will love every minute of my thirties. My 20s have been good to me, but they have been somewhat of a roller coaster. Whose hasn’t?! So here’s to thriving in the thirties!

My 5 on Friday will be dedicated to birthday stuff.

{ONE} I treated myself to Hawaii this year for my birthday trip. One thing about me that you may or may not know already is that I will pay MUCH more for memories than I will for things. Traveling and spending time with loved ones on special trips is priceless. So, this year, I visited my cousin-in-law and her son for a week in Hawaii. Kailua to be exact! Best birthday present I could have gifted myself.

{TWO} I am having a get together tomorrow at a place in Dallas that has a “beachy” atmosphere. It’s called Sandbar and has sand volleyball and healthy bites. I cannot believe I have never been here. But, tomorrow.. it is ON! Sand volleyball has been calling my name for awhile and let’s be honest, I love the heck out of ANYTHING that is beach-related. (Have I ever mentioned that I named my cat after California?!)

{THREE} My birthday toes. I love purple and palm trees (go figure!). So, I got a pedicure this past Sunday with both. Might be a little over the top, but hey.. it’s my birthday!

{FOUR} Birthday dinner. The boyfriend is making me dinner tonight. I am super excited about it. It’s the little things, y’all! I make dinner for both of us most of the time (okay, maybe 2 or 3 days out of the week and the rest we are on our own, eating leftovers, or going out to eat). It’s such a nice treat to have it go the other way around. Bring on the grill!

{FIVE} With 4 days left of my 20s, I want to give them a proper farewell.

  • Thank you, 20s, for allowing me to make kick-ass friends at Texas State University and graduate with a Bachelor of Business Administration, while having the time of my life in college.
  • Thank you, 20s, for giving me the best 21st birthday I could have asked for (with a trip to the Spurs locker room on the night they won the Finals in 2005).
  • Thank you, 20s, for getting me to Houston where I met some additional kick-ass people, made some great memories, and had my first “real job” at Shell.
  • Thank you, 20s, for teaching me that my real passion is nutrition, fitness, wellness, and health in general.
  • Thank you, 20s, for pushing me to go back to school and graduate with a Master of Science in Nutrition (and get my Registered Dietitian certification in the process).
  • Thank you, 20s, for allowing me to become a fitness instructor and eventually find Pure Barre (where I teach now).
  • Thank you, 20s, for giving me a relationship that would teach me to grow, become a better person, find my confidence again, and learn so much (6 years and counting!).
  • Thank you, 20s, for providing me the opportunity to see my parents pursue a huge dream of theirs and the bonus of also seeing my mom retire (with a huge smile).
  • Thank you, 20s, for giving me the career and job of my dreams.. being a wellness coordinator for various companies.
  • Thank you, 20s, for allowing me to find my passion of dance again through latin ballroom dance lessons.
  • Thank you, 20s, for reminding me how important the people in my life are. All people, past and present.

You have been good to me, 20s, so when I leave you I will always remember you.

WTEW: Teacher Series- Amy

Last week, we learned all about Amanda. We’ll take a look at Amy this week! She has just made the team for the Dallas Cowboys Rhythm & Blue Dancers. I am so proud of her. Go Amy! Nutrition and fitness are super important for dancers so let’s take a look at some of her tips/tricks…

  1. What is your favorite fruit?  Strawberries.
  2. What is your favorite vegetable? Asparagus.
  3. What is your favorite pre or post workout snack or beverage? Chocolate milk (low fat, of course!)
  4. What is your top eating healthy tip or trick? I only eat until I am 80% full. I indulge! Just never to the point I feel like I am about to explode. It takes about 20 minutes for your brain to realize your stomach is actually full.
  5. Tell me a random/fun fact about you. I’ve sung the National Anthem twice; once before my dance recital and the other at an Allen Americans hockey game.
  6. If you had a motto or a quote you like to live by, what would it be? “Life begins at the end of your comfort zone.”
  7. How long have you been teaching Pure Barre and what is your favorite thing about teaching? I’ve been teaching for almost 3 years. My favorite thing about teaching is when I see a client in the “zone” and truly focused on accomplishing their fitness goals, and that I get to help them get there!
  8. Favorite Pure Barre move? Back dancing.
What a good motto she has! I couldn’t agree more. Discomfort can be the catalyst for change and change is good. Getting past your comfort zone can help you achieve success for whatever goal you have. I hope her motto can motivate you in some area of your life this week.

Sunday Social: All about 4

It’s Sunday. You know what that means. Time for Sunday Social. One of my favorite link ups during the week! Today, we are covering things in 4.

  1. 4 favorite phone apps: Tone It Up– I use this to get a workout in when I travel or am at work on my lunch break. It rocks! Especially if you are a Tone It Up fan and enjoy their workouts like I do. P Tracker Lite- This is obviously just for females, but I love it for tracking that time of the month. It helps me plan ahead of time to (hopefully) prevent PMS symptoms. Ted- This app helped me on my long car ride alone. I love TEDx talks so every once in awhile I will listen to one on my phone. Cartwheel by Target- I save so much with this app. I have had it since September and have already saved over $100 with it. The app keeps track for you and there are some great deals if you shop at Target, which I do regularly.IMG_2993
  2. 4 favorite summer TV shows: Orange is the New Black just came out on Netflix so I consider that a summer show. Longmire is one that just started up again too, but I am still on season 1 so it is on my list. Witches of East End is about to start either this month or next month… it is SO good. And holy cow, these witches are gorgeous! Devious Maids is out right now and should continue through summer as well. The last two are on Lifetime. Excellent shows!
  3. 4 things you would NEVER do: Get my hair cut into a mullet (my last name is not “Dirt”), hunt gators myself (Swamp People is enough for me), swim with sharks (even in a cage… count me out), or jump off a cliff of any height into water (I don’t know what’s in that water).dirt
  4. 4 items you carry with you no matter what: Credit card, License, Phone, and Keys. That’s the bare minimum. But, normally I have my purse.
  5. 4 blogs we should follow: Since I am all about promoting positive health, I will focus on 4 blogs that I think are excellent for women’s health and well-being. These 4 include, but are not limited to: Mindful Meals, Summer Tomato, Eat Love Thrive Blog, and Tone It Up (you know I rave about them already).

5 on Friday: June

Friday always makes me happy. Plus, it’s June! Every day in June I write down at least 1 thing about my day that was a delight. I print off a calendar and write it in. I have done this since 2006 and love the tradition. It keeps me LOVING every minute of June, my birthday month. For this 5 on Friday, I am picking a few of my delights from the first part of June to share…

{ONE} Bonnaroo Music Festival. This weekend, the boyfriend and I are enjoying every minute of this music festival. I will have plenty of pictures to share when I get back. Anyone else been to Bonnaroo? I am most excited about Elton John, Frank Ocean, and Kanye West since I have never seen them live. Ohhhhhh I love me some music!!!!

{TWO} New kicks to help me kick butt! On the first day of June, I bought me a new pair of kicks. I was at the mall buying shorts for someone so had to take a walk through DSW while I was there (naturally, of course!) Found these and fell in love. And bonus, they were 65% off. Now I have more motivation to kick butt during my workouts!

{THREE} Pinterest Fail. I like to tap into my creative side. I saved a few tins from my Tazo Tea and wanted to make a cute box with them that I could use for other things like pens, paper clips, etc. I got out the hot glue gun, scrapbook paper, and stickers…. what happened next turned into a hot mess. Glad the pic doesn’t look QUITE as bad as it did in person, but it still looks pretty bad. I got a good laugh and enjoyed the process, but needless to say sent it off to the recycle bin. Next time, prepare for a beauty! And a different project…

{FOUR} PARTY TIME! We had my mom’s retirement party on Friday. I am so happy and excited for her. This next stage in life is going to be wonderful for her. She will spend most of her time in Colorado with JuneBug, Holly, and my dad. Family, friends, and co-workers all showed up to wish her well. It was a blast!

{FIVE} Orange is the New Black is back. We are savoring our Netflix time. I know that everyone gets excited and can easily watch the whole season in one night, but we are taking our time by watching one episode a night. I really like this season so far! And I also like hearing about the back story. I had no clue that this was based off a book and a real woman’s experience in prison for a year. Very cool!

Today, we will get to know Amanda. She has been a teacher with Pure Barre Dallas for over three years and is opening up her own studio in Allen soon.

  1. What is your favorite fruit?  Strawberries.
  2. What is your favorite vegetable? Mushrooms.
  3. What is your favorite pre or post workout snack or beverage? I have started making homemade protein bars! Power Hungry has some really great recipes. The No-Bake Chocolate Black Bean Protein Bars are my favorite!
  4. What is your top eating healthy tip or trick? I try to eat really healthy during the week and cheat a little on the weekends. Everything in moderation. I have a sweet tooth so definitely like to splurge every once in awhile!
  5. Tell me a random/fun fact about you. I am SMU’s #1 fan! I danced for SMU as a member of the Pom Squad while attending the university. Pony up!
  6. If you had a motto or a quote you like to live by, what would it be? How about a favorite word? My favorite word is “serendipity”, meaning a fortunate accident. Serendipity is what makes life so exciting!
  7. How long have you been teaching Pure Barre and what is your favorite thing about teaching? I have been teaching Pure Barre for 3 years. I love to motivate and help others achieve their fitness goals in an open, friendly environment. Lift, tone, burn!
  8. Favorite Pure Barre move? Knee Dancing- it is so hard, but works so well!

Toned Up-Date Tuesday!

It’s Tuesday. I am accountable. Are you? Let’s do a little run down of this past week with fitness and nutrition…

  • 150 By Summer?  I am at 125 so that means only 25 more miles to go to reach my goal. I got this!
  • Favorite workout video that Tone It Up has posted this past week? The one today. It was a new bikini series yoga. I loved it! Check it out here… you won’t regret it. It’s perfect if you are new to yoga or do yoga regularly, but want a quick 17 minute series to do after your workout.
  • What does the scale say? Well, it’s no fox, that’s for sure. I am not a huge fan of scales and would never advocate weighing all the time or letting the scale judge your fitness/nutrition. The scale is just a tool like a weight is or a yoga mat. Women tend to fixate on the scale number and if that is you, I would recommend limiting your time on the scale. I used to do that. I don’t anymore. So I am fine with weighing myself about once per week. I am very happy with my weight and my size. I gained about 5 pounds when I moved from Houston to Dallas 6 years ago. I have lost those pesky 5 pounds. I know, I know. 5 pounds isn’t much, but my goal is not really to lose weight so 5 pounds feels like a bonus.
  • Do I eat perfectly? Absolutely not. In fact, I want to laugh at that thought. I do not eat perfectly. At all! Because what am I? Yep, a human. Do not expect perfection. It sets you up for failure! I eat healthy most of the time, but I HAVE to include sweets every so often or I want to grab a cookie tray and devour the whole thing. Get to know yourself, your body, and that is how you will find YOUR health formula.

Only 1 more update to go and I am done with the Bikini Series with Tone It Up. I love this series! Not sure what I will take on next for fitness, but we’ll see. That’s all part of what keeps me excited about working out and staying healthy.
